Anders Celsius (born November 27, 1701 – died April 25, 1744) was a Swedish astronomer, physicist, and mathematician, best known for inventing the Celsius temperature scale.

Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Celsius studied at Uppsala University, where he later became a professor of astronomy. He was deeply involved in research on the aurora borealis, the shape of the Earth, and astronomical observations that advanced scientific understanding in the 18th century.

Celsius is most renowned for creating the centigrade temperature scale in 1742, which later became known as the Celsius scale. This system standardized temperature measurement, defining 0° as the freezing point of water and 100° as its boiling point at sea level.

His pioneering contributions extended beyond temperature measurement; he also participated in expeditions to measure the Earth’s meridian arc, proving that the planet is slightly flattened at the poles.
