El Greco (born Doménikos Theotokópoulos; October 1, 1541 – April 7, 1614) was a Greek painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance, renowned for his distinctive, elongated figures and dramatic use of color and light.
Born in Crete, which was then part of the Republic of Venice, El Greco trained in the post-Byzantine tradition before moving to Venice and later Rome, where he absorbed the influence of Renaissance masters such as Titian and Michelangelo.
In the 1570s, he settled in Toledo, Spain, where he developed his unique style—characterized by expressive distortion, bold colors, and spiritual intensity—that would define his greatest works, including The Burial of the Count of Orgaz and View of Toledo.
His work, often misunderstood in his lifetime, was rediscovered centuries later and celebrated as a precursor to both Expressionism and Cubism.

Place of Birth: Heraklion, Crete, Republic of Venice

Though largely overlooked after his death, El Greco was rediscovered in the 19th and 20th centuries, influencing artists such as Picasso, Cézanne, and Modigliani. Today, he is recognized as one of the most original painters in history.
El Greco died in Toledo, Spain, on April 7, 1614. His bold, visionary works continue to inspire generations of artists and remain central to the narrative of European art history.
