Gerardus Mercator (born March 5, 1512 – died December 2, 1594) was a Flemish cartographer, geographer, and cosmographer best known for creating the Mercator projection, a groundbreaking map projection that revolutionized navigation.

Born in Rupelmonde, in the County of Flanders, Mercator studied in Leuven, where he developed expertise in geography, mathematics, and astronomy. He produced globes, scientific instruments, and highly detailed maps.

In 1569, Mercator introduced his famous world map with the cylindrical projection that bears his name. The Mercator projection allowed sailors to plot straight-line courses for navigation, making it indispensable for maritime exploration.

Mercator also coined the term “atlas” for his influential collection of maps, helping define the field of modern cartography.
